Living with Epilepsy.

by admin on November 28, 2010

There are 3 million people in the United States living with epilepsy today. 10% of people will expierince a seizure in their lifetime and 3% will develop epilepsy by age 75. These numbers are going up on a daily basis due to our soldiers returning home with seizure disorders related to brain injury, PTSD or like so many of us, seizures of unknown origin.
In 1964 I was diagnosed with epilepsy. I was 14 yrs. old with plans on going into the military and becoming a nurse. My big choice then was Army, Navy or the Air Force. That all changed over night. Although it all seemed to come out of nowhere, the signs and symptoms were there very early on. But who knew? According to my family and the teachers in my world, I was accident prone and a day dreamer. My friends just thought I was funny… I was never aware of anything, so I never really knew what they were talking about. It just felt like “grown-ups” were sure hard to please. Well, by the time I met Carol Gino in the early 70s I had been to war and back. My nursing skills came from an education I had not been prepared for. But I did learn… When Carol approached me with her plan to write Rusty’s Story, I felt it was my chance to share what I had learned in the hopes it may help someone who was experiencing the impact of living with epilepsy. It is my hope now to offer this blog as a place for us to meet and share our thoughts and experiences. Not only for our selves but for everyone in our lives, who are trying to understand how they can live with epilepsy.
